报告人简介

Dr. Chen received his Ph.D. in Marine Microbial Ecology in 1995 from the University of Texas at Austin. He studies the diversity and function of microorganisms and their ecological role in the marine ecosystem by combining traditional and modern molecular technologies (i.e. genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics). The marine microbes of his interest include viruses, bacteria, cyanobacteria and microalgae. His research findings on the Chesapeake Bay microbiota have led to discoveries of novel microbes in other coastal estuaries. He also develops algae-based biotechnology as a solution for sustaining environments and producing renewable energy.

Dr. Chen has a total of 81 publications, which includes 70 peer-reviewed research articles and 11 book chapters. Many of his research articles were published in the top journals, such as Nature Review Microbiology, PNAS, ISME Journal, PLoS Genetics, Plant Physiology, Environmental Microbiology, GMC Genomics, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, etc. His research has gained the Google Scholar recognition with 3,882 citations and h-index of 32. Dr. Chen has been invited to deliver multiple speeches at domestic and international conferences. He has received research funds from NSF, DOE, NOAA, CCEMC, DNR, MIPS, Sea Grants, and industries. As principal investigator (PI) or co-PI, He has been awarded approximately $9 million research grants and contracts throughout his research career.
